Graphics and how to drink from a fiery bar
So I finally get to sleep around 10am, then crash until about 1.15. I needed to get my skates on and rush to class, but I managed not to be too late at all to Graphics, which was a fairly maths-intensive lecture. I hope I’ll get the hang of all of the maths, as a lot of it is a bit more advanced than I’m used to. Other than being hard, it was a good lecture.
From there it was back to the HUB and to explore a new part of the seating area that seems to not always be open. I’m not sure entirely how they determine which parts are open when, but I assume it’s some correlation with the lunch hours and how many people are getting food and wanting a seat. Pretty nice section to be sitting in, actually. I was, as usual, doing some emails and so on while I ate.
From there it was back to the CSE building for a ‘help session’ on the first graphics assignment and integration of the right toolkits (OpenGL and FLTK). While this sounded like it would be productive, it turns out the Teaching Assistant hasn’t even done the course and has never used FLTK before. Great… well, he ran through the slides (which he inherited from the course last year) and tried to give us a run-down. I think I’m going to have more luck nutting it out with my classmates. Speaking of which, I sat next to a pretty cool, chatty kind of guy named Rob, and we exchanged banter over our laptops. Rob was rather appreciative of my Angelina, and referred to his own one as the “Ghetto Ferrari”, since it was something of a brick with similar but only slightly less features and about half the cost of mine. Yeesh.
Afterwards it was off to the UBS to get the right edition of my graphics textbook, a folder for my graphics notes and a yearly diary. The textbook was the usual “my wallet was just raped by the publisher”, but it really surprised me how expensive just getting a folder and a little less-than-A6 sized diary was. Stupid Americans and their weird pricing of things. Well, at least I’ve got the stuff now, and I have the right textbook.
Back to the apartment for some email, then I talked to Anastasia for quite a while. It was at this point I realized I needed dinner, despite it being quite late. I walked up and down ‘the Ave’ for a bit before eventually grabbing a Chili burger and fries at the Irish Pub. This turned out to be quite entertaining – while at pub, I saw a barmaid pour alcohol on the bar, set it alight (glasses of some concoction in the middle) then spray more over it in a spectacular fire-breathing exercise which set the bar on fire! They then put it out and the guy who ordered it (or was ordered it in this case) drank the hot spirits. Very cool.
Back to the apartment for more email, I kept on installing Visual Studio 2005, MSDN and various other things, did some blogging while listening to music… I did some work for Greg (the one in New Zealand that is) as he needed it the following morning, but I don’t think my body generally liked that… more insomnia.
I miss having a proper computer/desk chair. Right now I have this silly chair they supply you with (which I suppose I should be grateful for having at all, really), and I’m using one of my pillows to cushion it out a bit. Even then… I wish I had a nicer chair. Definitely going on the list of things to get when I have a bit of money.
