Sleepless in Seattle

I don’t know how many people who read this get insomnia, but it’s this odd sensation like you’re tired but you can’t sleep. Sometimes you’re dead tired and you feel like you can’t even move, but you still can’t seem to get to sleep. Other times you’re just awake and it doesn’t matter what you do, you just stay awake. Nothing that I know you can really do about it other than to try settling into a rhythm, make sure you actually do go to bed… and just keep going if sleep doesn’t like the look of you. The world doesn’t wait for you to sleep.

I finally managed to get to sleep around 10 again, then just before 12 I get a call from Anastasia that thankfully wakes me up. Good thing she did ring actually, otherwise I would’ve missed my first class entirely, most likely. I head to class (about half an hour late) but really only missed the introductory part on streams which I quickly caught up on, so it wasn’t too bad after all. I don’t think I should be making a habit of doing that, though.

After class I headed over to the HUB for email, blog and food… didn’t quite get around to the food but I said to myself that I’d have some after my next class. From the HUB I went to the CSE for my Current Research Seminar. During this seminar my eyes definitely had a hard time focusing on what the lecturer was saying… I don’t know if it was my insomnia, the ventilation, the boring material or a combination of all of the above, but I find myself sitting back and struggling to remember most of what she was saying, which is pretty bad, really.

After that was the usual snack for the graduate attendees, then I went down to one of the computer labs to print off some papers. Nice, big, flat-screen monitors on the machines in the labs, and a lot of cool software it would seem as well. Very slick.

Then it was back to the HUB for a sub (mmm…), then I decided to take a little bit of time to relax. I went down to the games area and ten-pin bowled for a while. It took a while, but I relaxed and got into the groove. I’m still not a good bowler by any stretch, as I seem to alternate good bowls and bad ones and thus defeat the purpose of cumulative runs. In the end my best was 114 off of ten frames. I think small children do better than that. Ah well.

From there I exited out the wrong side of the HUB and thus took a somewhat circuitous route back to the apartment, but it wasn’t exactly pelting the pavement, so I wasn’t too fussed. When I got back I ended up having a big chat with the more amiable of my flatmates about all kinds of stuff – anime, manga, language, duty lists for the flat… all kinds of stuff. We also all tried some of Aidan’s Grey Goose citrus vodka (the one with the orange on it, not the lemon). Very nice, very smooth.

After that I watched some anime on my laptop, did a few emails, blogged and managed to chat to Dad over Skype. They’ve finally got video working, although it’s still in Beta-testing. Looks pretty good so far. After that I crashed.
