Curves, Apples and Insomnia
Turns out going to bed early when you’ve been up for over 24 hours doesn’t mean you’ll go to sleep right away. In the end I was awake for a little over 36 hours. I got a reasonable amount of sleep, or would have if it was just a regular night. I still need more though. Anyway, I got up and headed off to class pretty much right away. Had graphics, we talked about some interesting Bezier curves, splines and other cool things you can do to represent curves. I also talked to Brian about an idea I had in the last lecture about using Bezier curves to represent the modelling of joints, and he was telling me about using a 3D equivalent net, which sounds pretty darn cool. ^^
After that I went and saw Lindsay about a bunch of administrative stuff, like finally getting me an office and card-access to the computer labs downstairs (so I can print things off). I don’t have my own computer in my office yet (I’ll just take my laptop in), but I might be able to get one. Don’t know yet. The problem with pioneering an exchange situation is that no one has done anything before, so it’s all running on the spot to try and figure out what I need and how to arrange it. Ah well.
After all of that I came back to my apartment and had a little snack before heading back to the CSE Atrium, where Apple was recruiting and giving a presentation (and there was free pizza and soft drink). Yes, that’s right, Apple. While I think their stuff is horribly expensive and it’s likely I’ll never switch over purely for familiarity reasons, that’s not to say I don’t think a lot of their stuff is pretty cool. I do use iTunes for Windows, but that’s about my only regular exposure to Apple products. There’s an Apple store up the road a bit actually, but I haven’t been into it yet… even if I do, I won’t be able to afford it. Ah well. I talked briefly to the UW recruiter about internship possibilities down the track and possibly not during the US academic year (because I don’t actually follow it anyway). There are apparently some options, so I’ll email him, keep my ears open and check out my options for next year.
Anyway, after the presentation I came back to my apartment again, picking up my rebate cheque from Best Buy in the mail while I was at it. What I’m supposed to do with a cheque for $13 is a little beyond me… take it to a bank and get the cash I guess. I talked to Anastasia a bit before she went to bed then started in on my emails and so on that I needed to attend to. Before I knew it, it was 11pm and I hadn’t done my washing (for those of you that are American, that means ‘laundry’) and to be honest I couldn’t be bothered running down and doing it at such an hour. Tomorrow I’m going to try and get up early to go see the Computer Vision group (if I get an email with the room they’re in – all I have is a time) to discuss what they do, the classes they’re involved with and some of the research opportunities they have.
I posted some of the blog entries that have been sitting on my computer for the last few days and felt somewhat sad at myself that I hadn’t kept up my meditations for even a week… and naturally my sleep went totally pear shaped.
I then dove into working on my assignment, periodically doing some emails and other various bookkeeping activities. Eventually I semi-gave up on what I was actually working on. I had probably worked more on this one feature and got nowhere than I had on several commercial sites. I moved on to some of the interesting stuff, and got some nifty things (like texture mapping) working. I got pretty amped actually… so when I thought I was going to be more and more tired, I just seemed to get more and more wired… welcome to insomnia ladies and gentlemen. You won’t enjoy your stay.
