I too looked that silly once

I woke up feeling pretty groggy, but ok. Stayed groggy for about an hour or so, then I think I was actually in the same plane of existence as the rest of humanity. The start of the day was a bunch of emails and figuring out what I needed to do.

Today involved working on getting my head around my assignments, downloading code and so on for that. This ultimately ended very badly. My machine crashed due to some other media error that I was moving around at the same time, I lost a few things that were open and not saved (more fool me, I guess), I lost a track of which documents and webpages I had open, that kind of thing. To top it off I was already having trouble getting anything to work at all.

After I had rebooted and run a disk check I wrote a small list of things I needed to work out from prior to the crash, set up a few things to run, then went off to the IMA to run around with a basketball for a while. That was a lot of fun actually. I actually managed to get into the rhythm for my shooting and was shooting better than I had done in years. Since I haven’t really been playing for years that’s a bit of a redundant statement I guess, but even so it was nice to feel my ball skills coming back a little. No scrimmaging tonight, there weren’t really a lot of people around. I did see a couple of girls on the next court over doing some one-on-one… with their left arms tucked inside their shirts behind them. Since I’ve done the drill with your arm behind you (so you learn to shoot with one hand, not rely on your left to shield the ball, that kind of thing) it was funny to take a step back and go “Wow, it does look kind of silly, huh.”

After that I went back to my office and packed up my stuff. I headed up the Ave and got some Subway, the went back to my apartment and ate it while watching some anime. I had a good chat to Dace about some work stuff and just general catch up over Skype, so that was good, I hadn’t talked to him for a while. After that I went to bed… couldn’t get to sleep for a while again.

Good start, bad end

good-start-bad-end

Woke up before my alarm went off, just stayed there kind of groggy until it did. I pottered around doing some work stuff, accounts, emails, that kind of thing.

I walked over to the Terry desk to pick up a package that Mike had shipped to me (along with some others that should be arriving in the next few days) because they don’t ship to New Zealand. Nice day out, pleasant walk… eh, what’s the point of being in the US if you don’t get some of the perks for your friends? ^^;

I did a bunch of reading technical papers that I’ve needed to read for a while. I then went and cooked up some BBQ Beans that Anastasia gave me the recipe for that I’d had a few times with her when I was down in Florida. While I was in the kitchen I ran into Aidan, who told me to try some of his chicken soup… not bad, had radish and mushroom and chicken pieces all in a broth-looking liquid. It had that “I’m sure this is good for me” kind of taste. Or perhaps that “this better be good for me” kind of taste. Anyway, the beans were good, I even got the rest of the people here (which turned out to be quite a few) to try it, they all said it was good.

I chatted to Anastasia a little before she went to bed, then did some more reading. I chatted to Rach for a little while (she’s been in Auckland with Kat).

Felt a bit crappy at the end of the day actually, I went to bed a bit earlier than I thought and tried to sleep.

A good day

a-good-day

Stayed in bed watching anime to start my day off, which was nice. No sense in rushing the weekend and making a mess of things. Anyway, I did a little bit of admin, then I walked up and did my grocery shopping… that was a little more than I thought it would be, there were a few things that had run out. I walked up Brooklyn to get there rather than being lazy and taking the bus. It was really nice walking up the road and feeling the wind, having my hair stream out behind me like a flag. It felt very refreshing.

I took the bus back though, otherwise my arms would have broken from carrying all the groceries… well, more accurately I probably would have dislocated my shoulders.

Anyway, after that I had to figure out how to get a bunch of my food into the fridge/freezer since my lovely flatmates basically don’t leave me any room whatsoever in there. It totally sucks.

Anyway, I had some food and chatted to Anastasia for a while, then got down to work. Well, first I updated my blog, which took a while since I was so behind. I had most of the entries (or notes for them) written up on my computer anyway, but it still takes time.

I did a bunch of research and sketches for some graphics work for Dad, I had a chat with Richard about some work stuff, then got tired and went to bed. Took a while to get to sleep, but not too long.

It was an OK day, no more

Slept badly, woke up just after my graphics seminar had already started. I stayed home in did some work on my computer for a while, then went in to the office and did some work there, reading some papers I’d been meaning to read, that kind of thing. I had some speed bowling with Anna, my team member, playing an interesting variation where if you got nine pins down on your first go, it counted as a strike. We both had a good run each, actually, it was a lot of fun.

I didn’t end up going to the CSE TGIF this week, although it looked amusing – the Food Olympics. I did go to the Anime Club screening though, which was good, and I got to chat to some people as well.

I had a Jimmy Johns sandwich for dinner, which wasn’t bad. Not terribly filling, but not bad. They deliver as well, in case I’m too lazy to walk up the Ave. The staff were friendly, and apparently they usually make the sandwiches in less than 20 seconds. Pretty impressive to watch, actually.

Anyway, went home, did some email, vegetated some more, couldn’t get to sleep for ages, eventually got to sleep around 3am. I think.

I am an embarassment to academia

Anyway, I eventually put together a report which was all kinds of messed up, Christian was a great help in me getting at least some geometric calibration done on the camera and this is the result of all my work.

After that I had a meeting with Brian and Steve, which mostly involved me listening to them talking about the various different things that they wanted to make progress with. All in all it didn’t help me terribly much in sorting out the specifics of what I’m going to be doing, especially in terms of producing something meaningful at the end of the year, but hey, it’ll progress as it needs to I guess. I’ll make sure to keep on reading and learning, and making sure that the meetings actually get steered somewhere useful for me so that I can establish a good timeline of events and work.

After that I was pretty much a write-off, so I went home to vegetate.

Oh, and Christian showed me a bunch of interesting things for those of us that like old-school games. I’ve also been looking at getting this game for a while as well (and any sequels), but I don’t have the time to play any of them… I guess I’ll do it over the summer.

I seem to be saying that a lot.
