Good bagels, bad feelings
Well, I didn’t get a huge amount of sleep, but then that’s not particularly new information. A very groggy start meant I was running to the SIFE meeting with the Corporate Council, a board of people that seem to advise and run programmes for the business school here at UW. Interesting meeting, presenting a little about SIFE and seeing their reactions. I didn’t get a chance to say terribly much, but I think it was important that I was there. Afterwards I took my time heading back to my apartment because I was feeling pretty good and enjoying the patch of sunlight that we were having. I stopped in at the Bean & Bagel, which I walk past every day several times, and grabbed a coffee and a toasted bagel with a couple of different kinds of cream cheese – smoked jalapeno and garlic sun-dried tomato. Great bagels, good coffee… not great coffee, but not bad coffee either. The coffee left a slightly bitter after-taste but had a well rounded flavour overall. Not that I’m an expert on coffee, I just know what I like – and since I’m mildly lactose intolerant, all I can have without feeling ill is black coffee so it does tend to make me a little picky about it. Anyway, I took the time to just sit in the coffee-shop and watch time and people pass as I had my bagel and my coffee. The atmosphere in there is really cool, kind of like C1 back in Christchurch, but smaller (real hole-in-the-wall style)… nice and relaxed, pretty decent ambient music – I shall return!
From there it was back to my apartment for some email and administrative stuff, then off to Vision. Vision was ok, nothing particularly of note. After that I went back to my office and sat down to work on my Vision assignment. Bloody hell, what a nightmare. Instead of some kind of skeleton with which to test our code, the whole thing is to be done from scratch, which means I spent a great deal of time just getting the basic setup done. I then implemented a version of the algorithm (the first part) and did a bunch of testing and bug-fixing before I figure I got it ‘right’. It still doesn’t do some particular calculations, but as far as I can tell they aren’t actually used unless doing comparisons beyond the scope of the first part. Anyway, not a whole lot of progress and generally feeling not good about how much I need to get done by Friday.
Felt distinctly unwell as I headed to Subway for some food. The people in there are really chatty and quite cool, so that made me feel better. After that it was back to my apartment to eat and watch a bit of anime/television I had downloaded off of the DC++ hub.
I couldn’t get to sleep again… really bad bout of it actually, I didn’t get to sleep until about 6-something in the morning.
