Being here and there
Well, I was going to meet up with the SIFE people this morning. By the time I got to the building I met them in last time, I had a bad feeling. When I found no one upstairs I confirmed it – I was in the wrong building. However since the email out didn’t actually specify a room in the building I was supposed to be in, I had no idea where everyone was. I don’t have their phone numbers yet, so I trudged back. More walking than I was expecting. I picked up a coffee from the Bean and Bagel then head to my Architecture class. That was pretty interesting, it was more of a tutorial session on how to use a 3D Modelling program called AGI32.
After that was an interesting lecture for Photography, with plenty of discussion from the whole class about various problems with modeling light representations, materials, reflectance and so on. Definitely interesting stuff. After class I chatted with Chris for a while about the Vision assignment while we waited for his bus, then when that came I headed back to my apartment. On the way I grabbed a bagel, which was fabulous. Back at the ranch I had some leftovers and did some emails before packing up Angelina and heading back to my office. I briefly unpacked then went to the Colloquium, which was on Computer Vision! It was really interesting seeing a lot of what I’ve just been learning in class being put into context with the research at the forefront of the field.
After that I went over to the HUB to see what the Japanese discussion group was like. Pretty much everyone there except myself had been studying Japanese for quite a while and they could at least express themselves more than my 3-year-old level. Mostly it was a good chance for me to do some listening comprehension and see how much I could pick up. I also had a reasonably lengthy conversation with a Japanese woman who was traveling in the US for a bit. Her English was certainly better than my Japanese, but neither of us were particularly good, so it was certainly challenging! I helped her with her English a bit, and I tried to understand the translations in Japanese, as well as the snatches of conversation where she didn’t know the English and would try to explain in Japanese… that involved me doing a lot of post-processing as I slowly worked through what I just heard, tried to understand, then actually give a response.
After that I head back to my office and started working on my Vision assignment again. At the time of writing this, it’s now 4.30am and I’m still working on my assignment. I don’t think I’ll be sleeping, I’ll just be trying to work and work and work until it’s done, then I’ll fall over somewhere and sleep.
In other news, I got an email from Borders that informed me that Raymond E. Feist has just released his newest book here in the US. Another trilogy.. Feist is a very prolific author, but he’s incredibly good and I own pretty much everything he’s written, at least in the Midkemian universe. Given that I think I have a 25% off voucher lying around, I suspect I’ll be adding to my collection.
